Spud 150 Dedicated to John Phippen this Saturday

last updated on 9/19/2010

The season finale at Spud Speedway is going to miss one of Maine's most popular drivers. John Phippen has been attending races in the county for well over 20 years. Last year when John won the Spud 100 on this very weekend we spoke about his success at Spud Speedway and determined he had won 5 out of the previous 6 races he came to at Spud Speedway, dating all the way back to the Summer Sizzler series in the 90's. John has many fans in the County and so we as a track would like to take this race weekend, which he won one year ago, and dedicate it to "Big John Phippen". The race will start with any empty pole postition and we will have a moment of silence before the race in his memory. This weekends Spud 150 is a race that John was looking forward to, he had made the trip north on Labor Day weekend only to get washed out with over 3 or 4 inches of rain, but as a true racer would John headed down the highway to race at Speedway 95 that night. This just goes to show the kind of true racer John really was. The Spud 150 race will be Saturday September 25th at 4:00, this is also the final race of the Maine Racing Alliance Championship series. We are expecting great turnout for this event and I hope we can do our part in remembering one of Maine's own racing legands, "Big John Phippen".

Classic Car Show & Bomber Race This Weekend

This Saturday the weather forecast looks great and we have the Carroll's Auto Sales Show, Shine, & Time car Classic Car show from 12-3pm. Be sure to bring your classic to the show for everyone to enjoy and recieve a free pass to Saturday nights race. The car show is sure to be fun as we allow anyone who wants to take their chance at a fast time on 1/3 mile banked oval. We all know these muscle cars look fast, but now we all get a chance to find out. Then at 6:00pm the horsepower roars as all classes race to the championship with only 2 races left this year and really tight points races in many divisions, racing is sure to get real serious. This will be the final points race in the Quigley's Building Supply Late Model Division and only 1 point seperates the top spot between points leader Jerry Williams and Therran McDougal. Will Jerry win his second championship or will Therran win his first LMS championship? One thing is for sure we will all find out Saturday night. As if that wasn't all enough, we also have the final Bomber race of the year. We know these are always exciting and everybody wants to see if anyone can beat Bobby Anderson since he won the last 2 bomber races.

Theory of a Deadman makes appearance in Caribou Raceway looks to make Aroostook County a concert destination By Michael Fern edge staff writer mfern@themaineedge.com CARIBOU - Canadian rockers Theory of a Deadman appeared at Spud Speedway on Sunday and headlined a three-act night that drew thousands to the remote raceway located halfway between Limestone and Caribou. Appearing with opening acts 12 Stones and Eve 6, frontman Tyler Connolly, guitarist Dave Brenner, bassist Dean Back and drummer Joey Dandeneau led concertgoers through their top-10 hits, including "Bad Girlfriend," "All or Nothing," and "Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen" hit "Not Meant to Be" from their 2008 album "Scars and Souvenirs," plus hits from their first two albums. The group also played some new material they said will be on their upcoming album due out next year. With nearly 3,000 in attendance, the crowd's intensity only grew by nightfall as Eve 6 closed out a 45-minute set with an encore of their hit single "Inside Out" that preceded Theory's hour-long performance, despite temperatures that by dark had dropped into the mid-50s. It was the first such concert held at Spud Speedway, according to new owner Troy Haney, who purchased the property last August. "When I bought the racetrack a year ago, I had the idea of turning it into an entertainment facility," he said. ""We do stuff year-round, like snowmobile racing in the winter and monster truck shows." Haney originally tried to book Three Doors Down and Hinder for a July show, but the former backed out due to their desire for a schedule break. Still, his promoter was able to land Theory and concertgoers from Canada, New England and as far away as Tennessee flocked to the raceway, according to their presale data. While there's no immediate concerts booked, Haney said a major act may appear next year. "We don't have anything booked, but the promoters we use have a huge act they'd like to bring here," he said. "They estimate it could bring 15-20,000 people." While the speedway has seating for fewer than 5,000, Haney said the venue could hold 30-40,000 people. For Theory's performance, the stage area was at the forefront of the center pit, which could be pushed back for larger crowds. Haney credits the effort of a local nonprofit that assisted with beer sales, which he said raised $5,000 for them, and he hopes this concert and future performances will help the local economy. "Restaurant were busy and hotels were full, so I know we had an economic impact," he said. For information about the raceway and their upcoming events, visit their website at www.spud-speedway.com.
